A Grounded, Psychospiritual Approach to the Akashic Records

As an Akashic Records Master Teacher, I’m frequently asked fascinating questions about the “history” and “origins” of the Records.

Lately, my inbox has been filled with questions about popular New Age channeling narratives—stories claiming the “Akashic Records of Earth” were physically anchored during ancient civilizations like Lemuria, or that they are kept in a physical cave by extraterrestrial entities.

It’s human nature to be curious about these sprawling, cosmic “origin stories,” and to find resonance or spiritual meaning in them.

As a teacher dedicated to a grounded, psychospiritual approach, I see it as crucial to step out of science fiction or New Age lore and ground ourselves in the true, transformative nature of the Akashic Field.

When we treat the Records as an external cosmic history lesson, we run the risk of falling into spiritual bypassing, or using the Records (and other spiritual tools and concepts) to escape reality and the beautifully complex, messy reality of being human.

Let’s unpack where these cosmic narratives come from, why they appeal to us, and how we can work with the Records in a deep, transformative, embodied way.

The History Behind the Myth

To understand why some modern channeling often sounds like a space opera, we have to look back at how Eastern concepts were adopted by Western mysticism:

  • The Translation of Akasha: In ancient Sanskrit, the word Akasha translates directly to “space,” “sky,” or “ether.” It represents the fundamental element that holds and connects everything in the universe. It was never an ancient library or a physical filling cabinet.
  • The 19th-Century Western Shift: In the late 1800s, early Western occultists took this beautiful concept of a cosmic ether or “storage space” and literalized it. They began describing it as a sort of physical or static “database.” Later, 20th-century channelers layered New Age lore onto this framework, introducing spaceships, DNA activations, and lost continents like Lemuria.

While these grand stories are fascinating and even at times tap into archetypal and universal realities, they compartmentalize or seek to categorize something that is inherently unified.

There’s Only ONE Unified Field

Our human minds love to categorize things to make sense of the infinite. We want to separate the “Earth Records” from the “Cosmic Records,” or map out a timeline of when the Records were first “created.”

But the Akashic Field cannot be divided or pinned down in this way.

It’s an integral, ever-present fabric of our universe that has existed since the very beginning. There are no separate filing drawers, or chronological chapters, or different “types” of Records.

It is all ONE unified field of consciousness and energy.

When we attempt to slice it up into localized histories, we diminish its vastness.

Why Spiritual Bypassing Can Harm Us

Why are we so drawn to these intricate cosmic stories? Human beings crave extraordinary significance.

Believing that our current-lifetime struggles are rooted in an ancient Lemurian cataclysm might help us feel a temporary sense of relief, and may even resonate at some level of our experience.

But true healing can’t happen unless we’re willing to BE with ourselves, in a grounded way in the here and now, willing to examine how we’re living our lives, the choices we’re making, the thoughts and beliefs we’re holding, our perceptions of ourselves, the world, and our place in it.

Spiritual bypassing occurs when we focus exclusively (or sometimes obsessively) on cosmic lore to avoid doing the messy, necessary work of human growth.

It’s much easier to fantasize about an extraterrestrial past life than to sit with our immediate somatic tension, unpack childhood conditioning, release old patterns that no longer serve us, or heal relational trauma.

The Akashic Field is not an escape hatch from human life; it’s a mirror for the human psyche, and a place where deep, messy, beautiful, powerful, transformational healing can occur.

How We Can Practice Grounded Exploration

In my teachings, we pivot our gaze inward. When we open the Records, we always hold a clear, grounded intention for doing so… for example, to:

  1. Cultivate Somatic Integration: Feeling the expansive energy of the field in your physical body right here, right now.
  2. Uncover Subconscious Patterns: Using the field to witness and heal the real-time beliefs blocking your current life’s growth.
  3. Experience Direct Connection: Moving past someone else’s channeled narrative or story so you can have your own, unique, direct relationship with the vastness of this Universe.

For a scientifically minded, grounded look at how this field actually operates without the New Age fluff, I highly recommend reading The Immutable Laws of the Akashic Field by Dr. Ervin Laszlo. As a systems theorist, Laszlo beautifully bridges cutting-edge quantum physics with classic spiritual intuition.

The Ongoing Invitation

The next time you come across a particular channeled material, or cosmic origin story, notice what it stirs in you.

Lovingly and honestly ask yourself:

Is this story (or information) bringing me deeper into my body and my current life, and helping me heal & evolve in a tangible way with real benefits for myself and others, or is it taking me AWAY from it?

Is this story or information pointing to something that needs healing or acknowledgment in myself… maybe a longing to be somewhere else, or a deep knowing that my Soul originates in a place beyond Earth, or a loneliness about not being understood by other humans (or not understanding other humans)?

If so, what’s being reflected back about my own inner state, and what kind of healing or expansion might be needed?

The most sacred classroom isn’t found on an ancient lost continent… we can always find it within, by returning once again with mindfulness and love to the present moment.

With love & care,
Josephine
