Edgar Cayce and the Akashic Records

Who was Edgar Cayce?

Edgar Cayce is the most well-known Akashic Records reader of modern times. He has been referred to as the “sleeping prophet” and the “father of holistic medicine.”

He used the Akashic Records in a trance-like state to deliver helpful information to his patients. In a sense, Cayce was also a medical intuitive. He diagnosed illnesses and helped people overcome physical and spiritual challenges.

Edgar Cayce was born in 1877 on a Kentucky farm. He exhibited psychic and intuitive abilities from an early age. If Cayce had been a child in the 21st century, we might have referred to him as an “indigo child” or a highly sensitive person (HSP). Like many intuitive children, Cayce played with imaginary friends (i.e., spirits/spirit guides) and communicated with his late grandfather’s spirit.

As Cayce grew up, he felt a strong desire to help others. He found that he could reach a deeply meditative state by lying on a couch and closing his eyes. In this state, he was able to connect to what Carl Jung refers to as the “collective unconscious.” We might also call this universal consciousness.

By tapping into this vast field of information, Cayce helped his patients answer questions like “What is my life purpose?” and “How can I heal from this physical illness?”

As a psychic, Cayce predicted future events and gave answers to many of life’s mysteries — such as how the pyramids of Egypt were built.

Most of Cayce’s readings focused on physical health and helping people heal from illness. Based on Edgar Cayce’s Association for Research and Enlightenment, Cayce’s readings covered 5 general topics:

  1. Health-related information
  2. Philosophy and reincarnation
  3. Dreams and dream interpretation
  4. ESP and psychic phenomena
  5. Spiritual growth, meditation, and prayer

Cayce and the Akashic Records

In his deeply meditative state, Cayce accessed the vast field of information and wisdom known as the Akashic Records.

The Records are a storehouse of every thought, deed, and action that has ever existed. They also contain information about your Soul’s evolutionary journey, including information about every time you’ve experienced life in a human body. This is why we can use the Akashic Records to access past life information and heal past life trauma.

The Records are also known as the Book of Life. In modern terms, the Records are like the “cloud” — a huge archive of data that constantly shifts and grows.

Edgar Cayce described the Akashic Records as follows:

Upon time and space is written the thoughts, the deeds, the activities of an entity – as in relationships to its environs, its hereditary influence; as directed – or judgment drawn by or according to what the entity’s ideal is. Hence, as it has been oft called, the record is God’s book of remembrance; and each entity, each soul – as the actitivies of a single day of an entity in the material world – either makes the same good or bad or indifferent, depending upon the entity’s application of self.

I like that Cayce refers to the Records as the “book of remembrance.” In working with the Records personally and with clients, I often find that the information that comes through is a remembering of something we already knew.

The Akashic Records help us remember who we really are, why we are here, the choices we’ve made in past lives that have led us to this very moment in time. The Records also help us remember our own power, gifts, and soul purpose.

In his readings, Cayce was always directed to the information that would be most helpful to the client at that particular moment. In my own readings, I experience the same thing. The Record Keepers always begin with the information that’s most relevant, helpful, and necessary for the client to know.

Cayce also spoke of the Records as containing “conditions that might have been, that are, and that may be” (Cayce reading 304-5). This is an important point because the Records can shed light on past lives, a person’s current lifetime, and possible future outcomes based on the choices we make today.

The Place of the Records

In some of his readings, Cayce gave detailed information about the Akashic Records and how they work. For example, he said:

As to the place of the Records – this is a place, yet it is everywhere. It, the information, to be individualized, must come from source into some form to be interpreted in the experience of the seeker…

In other words, the Records are everywhere and nowhere at the same time. It’s impossible to pin down the actual location of the Records because they’re encoded in the universal energy field. There’s a light grid that surrounds and interpenetrates all of us. It’s in this grid that the Records are held.

When you learn how to access the Records yourself, your energy field merges with the field of the Records. This is what allows you to pull down and retrieve information from the “cloud.”

The Records’ Symbolic Language

In another reading, Cayce told another client that “much of the information contained within the Akashic Records was written in symbolic form and required interpretation” (from Todeschi, Edgar Cayce on the Akashic Records, p.87).

This has always been true for me as well. The Records have their own language of metaphor, symbol, and imagery.

For example, I once did a reading for a client who was having issues with her partner. She felt as though she couldn’t be fully herself in their relationship. She felt as though she couldn’t ask for her own space. She felt that if she asked to have time to herself, it was as though she was abandoning or betraying her partner.

Inside the Records, I retrieved her book and then asked to be shown her partner’s book. Of course, we can’t read anyone’s Records without their consent. I didn’t look inside her partner’s book, only examined it from the outside. I quickly saw that their books were bound together by a heavy, rusty chain. The chain felt rough to the touch and really constricting. I could feel its heaviness on my chest; a feeling of being bound or constricted by a straitjacket. Unable to move or breathe deeply.

I shared this image with my client. She had an emotional reaction to this and confirmed that the dominant emotion in this relationship was constriction and lack of freedom. Fear of asserting herself. Fear of enforcing boundaries. Fear of what would happen to her partner if she gave herself more time to pursue her own interests.

With the help of the Record Keepers, we worked on untangling that heavy chain and removing it. This created some space between her book and her partner’s book, which we then re-attached with a much looser and thinner cord of light.

Shifting from the tight chain to a looser cord of light, which allowed for more space and individual freedom within the relationship, felt like a relief to my client. She could feel a heaviness lifting off her chest (I could feel this as well).

We also worked, of course, on how she could assert herself and enforce clearer boundaries moving forward. But the Record Keepers helped us clear this heaviness and lack of freedom on an energetic level. This opened the door for my client to make different choices within the relationship. (She left that relationship later on and said that clearing out the heavy chain that was keeping her and her partner bound up really helped in finally taking that step.)

In this case, the heavy, rusty chain was a symbol for:

  • co-dependence within the relationship
  • the inability to take time for herself
  • lack of clear and strong boundaries
  • lack of independence and self-sufficiency
  • over-reliance on the relationship as a source of identity (i.e., not wanting to be a “single person” again)
  • idealizing her partner
  • possible past life contract to never “abandon” her partner and always put him ahead of herself
  • the rust on the chain also indicated that this relationship was past its expiration date

The Akashic Records and Soul Growth

In Edgar Cayce on the Akashic Records, Kevin Todeschi says:

it’s not that the Records are concerned with predicting the future; rather, their function is the analysis and tracking of individual and collective opportunities for soul growth… The soul’s passage through time and space is the method by which individuals grow in consciousness.

Cayce did use the Records for psychic prediction. Like Todeschi, though, I see the Records’ main purpose as helping people evolve spiritually by becoming more conscious of their baggage, patterns, dysfunctions, karma, and unfinished business from past lives.

Your Soul – just like everyone else’s Soul – is always yearning for evolution and development. Your Soul wants you to learn important lessons, become wiser and more compassionate, and shift to higher and higher levels of consciousness.

As it moves through time and space, your Soul makes conscious choices about the challenges and situations you will experience. All of these challenges are designed specifically for you to heal and grow as a spiritual being. To become more connected to Divine Source. To clear out anything that doesn’t serve you.

How the Soul Evolves Across Time and Space

Let’s say you were a healer or mystic in a past life. You had powerful clairvoyant and healing abilities. These gifts allowed you to help your community and heal others. But your gifts were also threatening to some people, or maybe they went against the dominant culture. So you were banished, persecuted, or even killed for having these gifts.

In your current lifetime, you might suspect very strongly that you have healing gifts. Or you might be drawn to healing work. Or you might have a strong desire to help others heal. But there’s also a part of you that’s really scared, maybe even terrified at the idea of actually “coming out” as a healer.

If you were to access the Akashic Records and receive information about your past life, this would give you context about why you’re irrationally afraid of being a healer in this lifetime.

The Record Keepers would also help you clear out your past life trauma and fear so you can reclaim your healing gifts now. By becoming conscious of this process – of what your Soul experienced in a past life and how it’s affecting you today – you can start making different choices. You can take your power back. You can detach from this very old fear and align yourself with your inner power, confidence, and purpose.

If you choose not to work through this, you’ll face the same issue in a future lifetime. The fear of being a healer and following your Soul’s purpose will come up over and over until you clear it. Until you do the necessary work to evolve and align yourself fully with your Soul’s calling.

You’re writing your own story

Cayce’s readings always make the point that, as a soul having a human experience, you’re writing your own story as your life unfolds. You do this based on the choices you make, the actions you take (and don’t take), and the words you speak every day.

In each moment, there are infinite possibilities of where your life could go. Ultimately, you co-create your reality and narrow down those possibilities based on your behavior, thoughts, intention, and vibration. Becoming more conscious of how you’re interacting with the Universe and making choices can help you create a more intentional life.

The Akashic Records can help with this by giving you access to the highest level of divine guidance. The Record Keepers will always give you clarity, hope, and support so you can make informed decisions before you take your next step.

It’s also important to remember that what’s written in the Akashic Records is always changing. The Records are a living, breathing field of energy. When you decide to make a different choice, when you heal a past life issue, when you release an old pattern or attachment, you’re changing the content of your individual Record. This means you’re also changing your future outcomes and opening up to new possibilities.

To learn more about this, you can read my post on how the Akashic Records can be changed.

In this lifetime, you have free will and the power of choice. The Akashic Records can help you enact your free will and live according to your highest spiritual truth.

With love,
