The prison of perfectionism and hypervigilance

I know how draining it is to live trying to be perfect.

How taxing and exhausting it is on your body, heart, and soul.

How challenging it is to shut off your racing thoughts and just BE, without having to prove your worth to anybody (including yourself).

I also know that perfectionism and hypervigilance are survival mechanisms.

They are acquired trauma responses – ways in which you learned, consciously or unconsciously, to keep yourself safe. And to try to prevent a similar trauma from happening again.

Trauma doesn’t have to be life-shattering to leave a lasting impact on you.

For example, you might have developed perfectionism as a coping mechanism after someone laughed at you in the 5thgrade, or after you were picked last in gym class, or after your parents punished you for getting a C in math that one time.

In forcing yourself to be “perfect” at all times, you’ve tried to avoid the hurt of being mocked, shamed, rejected, or seen as inadequate or as a failure.

But you don't have to live like this anymore.

Stuck in the fear of disappointing others (or yourself)

Often, hypervigilance develops as a secondary coping mechanism with perfectionism.

In this course, we’ll explore what I call perfectionistic hypervigilance – a particular brand of hypervigilance where the main threat you are constantly avoiding is the possibility of disappointing others, being perceived as imperfect, or making a mistake.

Living with perfectionistic hypervigilance is painful and soul-draining.

It is a prison.

It prevents you from expressing who you really are, unconditionally and without apologizing.

It keeps you from living a full, enjoyable, rich life where mistakes are not only allowed but embraced.

In holding yourself hostage to perfectionism and hypervigilance, you abandon the part of you that is yearning to express itself fully, to create without limits, to BE in the world without fear.

Meet your course instructor

Hello! My name is Josephine, and I’m a recovering perfectionist.

I’m also an ambitious, type A overachiever. (I completed my master’s and PhD degrees in English Literature - and left academia and started a spiritual business - by the age of 30.)

Up until I left academia, I lived a tightly controlled, cautious, overly planned life.

I was diagnosed with generalized anxiety and social anxiety at 19. Before that, in high school, I suffered from telephobia - a phobia of phone conversations, mostly because I feared awkward silences or saying something stupid. I lived with this anxiety as a constant low-level hum (which sometimes erupted into panic) beneath the surface of my outwardly successful life.

In my 30s, starting my own business from the ground up challenged me in new, unexpected, terrifying, life-changing ways. Unlike the academic world I had inhabited for so long, the world of carving out my own path as a healer didn’t come with a step-by-step roadmap. This new world has required me to be brave. To take chances. To try things out and – gasp! – make mistakes. To get things wrong. To “fail” and feel stupid… and then get up the next day and try again. In other words, to finally confront and work through my perfectionism.

In this course, I will teach you everything I’ve learned through my own healing process and in working with 1:1 clients who have struggled with perfectionism and hypervigilance. My life now is much fuller, more enjoyable, more peaceful. I care very little about being perfect or being liked by everyone.

From my heart to yours, I deeply hope that you’ll be able to liberate yourself from the prison of perfectionism. I’ve designed this course to help you do exactly that.

I want you to think of this course as setting the foundation for a healing process that will unfold over a longer period of time – beyond our 21 days together. We’ll be jumping in to the deep end of the pool and doing a LOT of work in 21 days. But everything you learn here is meant to be applied and used for much longer – basically, whenever you need it.

Healing is something that unfolds over time, it’s not linear, and there is no “finish line.” We will continue healing ourselves while we’re incarnated in physical bodies. And that’s ok. Whatever form your healing takes in this course is welcome. “Healing” might include having an important breakthrough, releasing an old pattern, transforming your mindset, developing more self-compassion, and/or shifting your relationship to perfectionism and hypervigilance.
